Jesus looked directly into the eyes of Peter, the rough fisherman he called a Rock but who really was as unstable as a pile of sand. He also called Zacchaeus by his first name, an arrogant and despised tax collector tired of living a twisted, empty life. God transformed both into faithful, powerful messengers to their communities and nation.
This year 7 valiant young people are attending seminary. They all came out of the “depths” of the huge poverty stricken neighborhoods of Tijuana. Just like Peter and Zacchaeus, they weren’t qualified to be called into ministry but God doesn’t call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
Let’s not judge our efforts according to the size of the harvest, but rather by the amount of seed sown. Let’s not forget that faith is not handing a lottery ticket with one hand and staying seated, but rather faith is trusting in God, getting up, and getting to work. At our humanitarian centers in Alamar and Miramar we help many migrants who come weeping silent tears of loneliness, sadness and desperation. We evangelize them and give them food. We also tell them that God loves them and sometimes the best blessings come into our lives disguised as pain and affliction.
We are pilgrims in this world and haven’t made it home yet.
